I’ve gone on record here and nearly everywhere on the internet in defense of Joe Buck.
The well-known and sometimes polarizing St. Louis born play-by-play sports broadcaster has enjoyed a steady rise not only in his industry, but also among the ranks of “celebrities who poke the best fun at themselves.” Self-deprecation is Buck’s weapon of choice, to go with blunt honesty, in taking down his detractors.
There’s not much to complain about. You only think he hates your sports team because he’s calling the game against them or they didn’t win enough to make the game Buck is calling. He’s dominated the baseball broadcast industry along with the NFL. He’s spent the quarantine narrating family videos of all kinds, getting good publicity and truly perfecting the comic touch of giving a blow-by-blow call of a basement tennis match between two young siblings.
This week, Porn Hub reportedly offered Buck a million dollars to announce their live cam shows. The site is also taking other applications from out of work sports announcers.
Now, we all know Buck wouldn’t do this. Something to do with a contract with Fox would probably cut the conversation in half, but I simply don’t see him narrating a home video with Uncle Joe and Aunt Lucy giving all they got. But that didn’t stop him from sending back one of the best responses a celebrity could possibly produce:
I love this. He could have played coy and wrote a half-baked response that involved a little dirt-but he decided to completely go for it instead. And I believe him when he mentions handing back some of the money. I really do.
If you doubt that, check out his new podcast with actor Oliver Hudson (the one with the famous sister, dad, and mom). Buck uncoils old and new stories about parenting, adulting, and everything in between. It’s a different side of him, one more piercing and indelible than the book he wrote a few years ago.
I am here for more Buck unplugged instead of the son of Jack Buck describing the location and movements of a butt plug. Give me more savvy tweets and juicy podcasts, Joe.
Thanks. Keep on keeping on, sir.
